Position: Cabin/Activity Counselor

Classification: Nonexempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: Unit Head, Activity Head

Position Purpose: The Cabin/Activity Counselor is responsible for guiding, supervising, and organizing campers in the cabin, in activities, on trips, and throughout camp so as to meet the goals of Clearwater Camp.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in the cabin.

1. Live in a cabin with campers, sharing time with and creating a positive camper group.

2. Ensure that campers are properly supervised at all times and that all established camp policies are observed.

3. Supervise daily living, including waking girls up and putting them to bed at night, overseeing campers’ personal hygiene, and counseling homesick campers.

4. Communicate effectively with counselors, including working together to provide consistent, positive discipline.

5. Actively work to help campers develop friendships, demonstrate respect for others, and grow in leadership and responsibility.

6. Complete all assigned reports, record keeping, and parent communications as assigned.

2. Maintain high standards of health and safety throughout camp for campers and staff.

1. Provide for the physical, psychological, and emotional care of each camper within your supervision, including recognition of personal health needs.

2. Assist campers with personal, interpersonal, and health issues, and discuss with Camp Nurse, supervisor, and/or Executive Director when appropriate.

3. Ensure that campers and staff follow all established safety procedures for activities throughout camp, including providing a safety orientation, safety checking equipment, and ensuring the proper use of equipment.

4. Practice personal self care in order to be able to fulfill responsibilities

3. Develop and deliver a program that is fun, engaging, and appropriate for the age and ability of campers.

1. Plan and teach progressive activities designed to accommodate different ages, abilities, and interests, including rainy day activities.

2. Follow all established objectives, progressions, procedures and safety regulations.

3. Continuously evaluate the success of the program and adjust activities accordingly.

4. Model good sportsmanship, cooperation, spirit, and effort.

5. Participate in the maintenance, inventory, and care of equipment and supplies used in camp activities.

6. Plan, organize and/or supervise special cabin, unit or camp activities and trips as

delegated by the Unit Head, Head Counselor, or Program Director.

4. Manage and care for the physical facilities and equipment in the cabin and activity area.

1. Maintain in good condition all assigned program equipment.

2. Ensure the security of program facilities when not in use, including but not limited to; swimming and boating areas, archery range, and pottery kiln.

3. Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Immediately report maintenance and/or equipment concerns and any hazards to supervisor.

4. Responsible for seeing that cabin, unit and activity areas are cleaned daily according to established procedures.

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 19 years of age and have completed one year of college or of like experience.

• Documented experience, training, or current certification in the program area, or willingness to obtain.

• Current certification in CPR and First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder where required, or willingness to obtain.

• Current Waterfront Lifeguard certification where required, or willingness to obtain.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Training and experience in teaching the designated activity to children.

• Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions.

• Ability to adapt and adjust activities depending on things such as weather and schedule changes.

Essential Functions:

• Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

• Ability to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply approved behavior-management techniques.

• Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.

• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

• Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

• Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities/program.

• Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.

• Capable of carrying out tasks with daily exposure to the sun, heat, cold, and other environmental conditions.
