The Camper Care Coordinator serves as the lead professional in preparing for and responding to camper and staff issues related to mental, emotional, and social health, safety and well-being, including but not limited to: anxiety, behavior management, interpersonal disputes, homesickness, hygiene, and previously diagnosed disorders. They support participants both directly (for example, meeting with a specific participant who is demonstrating difficulty adjusting to the expectations of camp life), and indirectly (for example, reviewing information provided by a participant’s therapist and parent in advance and preparing their camp counselor to remind them of a particular coping skill to use).
This is a full-time, live on site, temporary/seasonal position, with room and board provided and a pay rate dependent on qualifications, up to $1000/week. Full summer candidates are preferred, however licensed & experienced candidates interested in working one or more sessions (4, 6, or 13 days) will also be accepted.
- Attend and participate in all pre-camp staff orientation & training.
- Review all participant behavioral health paperwork prior to each session; communicate with parent/guardian/caregivers, participants, and/or out-of-camp behavioral/mental health providers if more information is needed or if questions/concerns arise during the session.
- Meet with counselors/cabin staff prior to each session to provide an overview of their upcoming participant group and discuss any relevant specific support needs or behavior management plans.
- Serve as the lead professional in determining appropriate responses to all camper and staff issues related to social, emotional, and mental health, safety, and well-being, including but not limited to: anxiety, behavior management, interpersonal disputes, homesickness, hygiene, and previously diagnosed disorders; both indirectly such as training cabin staff to respond to a common scenario, and directly as needed.
- Develop ongoing formal and informal staff training opportunities that give staff the necessary tools and skills to provide excellent camper care and outcomes as related to mental, emotional, and social health.
- Respond to and document camper situations/incidents related to mental, emotional, behavioral, or social health/well-being as needed.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with Program Director, Leadership Team members and other healthcare staff team members to monitor and support the overall physical, mental, social, and emotional health, safety, and well-being of campers and staff as a team.
- Participate as an active member of the camp community and be available to support staff members on an ongoing basis with challenging camper situations and mentor them in responding to campers’ behavioral, emotional and mental health needs; directly step in to help resolve behavioral or other issues as appropriate.
- As appropriate, design intervention and/or management plans and monitor and report on progress.
- Full summer candidates: Work as part of overall summer leadership team, including planning and leading camp-wide activities and events, participating in leadership team and staff meetings, collaboratively and productively problem solving to address camper or staff issues that arise, and supporting logistics of camp life such as participant arrival and check-in, staff time-off coordination, staff appreciation, or ongoing all-staff training.
- Implement and enforce all One Heartland staff and facility policies and procedures as well as all health and industry regulations such as state of Minnesota and ACA (American Camp Association) standards
- Conduct themself in a professional and friendly manner to ensure positive relations with participants, families, community, volunteers, visitors and staff.
