Job Description


JOB SUMMARY: Happy Hollow Summer Camp, which hosts 10 weeks of overnight camp for children ages 7-14, is seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and creative Lifeguards to provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. Our instructors are responsible for maintaining a safe and fun environment for campers and staff down at the lake during each week of camp.


  • College student or at least 19 years of age
  • Current certification in small water craft safety
  • Training and or experience in canoeing (documented)
  • Ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages
  • Ability to supervise staff and make scheduling assignments
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self control
  • Ability to adapt to a camp setting
  • A great ability to be flexible at all times

Job Requirements

· Abide by all camp rules

· Participate in pre-camp training for all staff

· Participate in small craft safety class during staff training

· Set up kayak area during staff training to include: inventory, rules, lesson plans, equipment inspection, beach front inspection, and cleaning

· Teach staff their responsibilities during staff training

· Teach and monitor proper use of equipment

· Provide that each canoe session be age appropriate

· When instructor is not present, insure all paddles and lifejackets are locked up in the shed and the gate is closed

· Conduct orientation to all new participants that includes rules, safety procedures and proper lifejacket fit (lifejackets are a must for everyone including the instructor)

· Assist in coordinating waterfront activities with special events and themes

· Plan alternate programs to be used in inclement weather

· Keep kayak and beach front area neat and orderly

· Inform the camp director of needed supplies, preferably one week in advance

· Submit to camp director, weekly evaluation of canoe program

· Prepare achievement recognition awards

· Assist in organizing and conducting other camp activities

· Assist with camper supervision in the cabin, at meals, bed time, on duty, and all-camp activities

· Insure all equipment is properly inventoried, cleaned and stored at the end of camp

· These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required
