Special Needs Program Specialist: Overnight Summer Camp

We’re looking for motivated and fun individuals who have a desire and ability to work with children outdoors, in a mission-focused, not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the success and growth of children with emotional, learning and behavioral challenges by providing individualized attention as part of structured, nurturing, and fun group programs.

Camp Starfish Program Specialists are camp counselors who are responsible for the curriculum and teaching of a specific program/activity area(s) on camp (please see list below); they may also be responsible for special events and experiences that make camp such a special place. In 2021, Program Specialists may live separately from campers or they may be asked to live in cabins alongside youth campers should staffing needs arise that necessitate this. Like all Starfish staff, Program Specialists will assist campers who may need extra help and will assist with implementing individualized camper behavioral plans as needed.

In 2021, we are hiring specialists to lead the following program areas at camp. If you are skilled in more than one area, even better!

• Boating - Canoes & Kayaks (must be a strong swimmer and willing/able to be certified as a lifeguard)

• Cooking/Baking

• Learning Center

• Martial Arts

• Music

• Sensory Gym / Health and Fitness / Yoga


Job Responsibilities:

• Develop age-appropriate lessons for your program area(s)

• Teach activity periods daily in your program area(s)

• Ensure safety in and around the program area at all times

• Encourage camper participation in camp activities

• Help campers who may require additional time or explanation

• Support campers who may require extra attention or assistance

• Implement and monitor individualized camper behavioral plans


Internship/Course Credit/Fieldwork Experience Information:

Many individuals on our summer staff team use their experience working at Camp Starfish to obtain course credit through their college or university. Whether you are looking to grow personally or develop marketable skills for the corporate or professional world, work at Camp Starfish will prepare you for almost anything! In previous years, staff members studying Social Work, Recreation, Sports Science, Wilderness Leadership, Psychology, Education, Business Management and many other subjects were able to spend the summer having fun at camp while still working towards their degree!

If you are planning to use your time at camp to gain course credit, we strongly recommend that you speak with your advisor, etc. to determine the necessary steps to apply for credit at your particular institution.

Job Requirements

• Prefer applicants who are at least 19 years old with one year of applicable work/life/college experience outside of high school

• Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing of the English language

• Must possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and to implement the camp program. This may include standing, bending, jogging, lifting, stooping and stretching

• Must be able and willing to work long days with campers and other staff members, often 7 am to 9 pm with limited breaks, six days a week

• Must be to handle the pressures and expectations that are associated with living with coworkers and children

• Must be able to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions including but not limited to: sun and heat, cooler temperatures and rain.

• Must be available to work the entirety of the season (June 12 - July 21)

• Must pass all background checks as required for seasonal employees of an organization working with vulnerable child populations
