Job Description

Welcome to Camp Idlewild of Florida! We are a Camp for children ages 6-17 & young adults ages 18-30 with special needs! We run camps year round. We offer weekend residential camps during the school year, and weeklong residential camps during the Summer months. We are looking for Summer Camp Counselors to join our team from June 5th- August 5th. Counselors trained during summer will have the option to work weekend camps throughout the year as they like. 

What do Camp Idlewild Program Specialists do? They pack their bags and move into a cabin for a week! Each program specialist is responsible for planning, setting up, leading, and breaking down activities during the weeklong camp session. Program Specialists will be responsible for leading activities as well as overseeing counselor participation & getting involved with campers during activities to ensure they don’t get lost or hurt. 

Being reliable, a natural leader, and having the ability to build good relationships with children are essential traits of a Program Specialist. Comfort in leading outdoor activities, like hiking, canoeing or crafts is essential. All our staff go through a week of training prior to campers arrival, so we will teach you all you need to know regarding campers & the way our program runs! If you’re patient, energetic, and passionate, we’d like to meet you!

 

Responsibilities
  • Participate & supervise campers during indoor activities (such as dancing, science, rainy day games)
  • Assist Counselors in care of campers during cabin time, assist with daily routines & living (i.e; reminders to brush teeth, take showers, etc) when needed
  • Lead, participate & supervise campers & staff during recreational activities (such as swimming, sports or crafting)
  • Escort and oversee children
  • Ensure camper & staff involvement & encourage campers & staff through games and explorations
  • Resolve occasional challenges between children and address behavioral issues
  • Make sure all safety rules are followed
  • Ensure assigned cabin is clean and that campers don’t litter recreational areas or nature
  • Ensure all prgram areas are maintained during activities & cleaned up afterwards
  • Perform first aid or take care of injuries as needed (all staff will take CPR & First Aid Class during training week)
  • Keep accurate incident/ behavior logs
  • Assist in cleaning/wrap up in between each camp session

Skills

  • Experience in leadership or camp setting or similar role working with children is preferred
  • Familiarity with camping and various outdoor activities is preferred
  • Feel comfortable leading activities
  • Patient and reliable
  • Organization and communication skills
  • A love for children
  • Energetic and positive personality
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, crouching or carrying children)
  • First aid- and CPR-certified preferred (if not, training will be done on site)
  • High school diploma
