Mondamin and Green Cove are private, brother-sister summer camps located on Lake Summit, six miles south of Hendersonville, NC. There are 2 nurses at each camp. Nurses generally stay for one or more sessions. Both camps offer four sessions: 1 week in early June, 3 weeks in June, 5 weeks in July and early August, and 2 weeks in August. There are approximately 190 campers (age 7 to 17) at each camp for each session, and about 55 counselors, camper-counselor ratio being about 3.5:1.
There is normally a doctor in residence who is available for consultation almost any time; the nearest hospital is six miles away in Hendersonville. One nurse is always on duty at the health center; the other is normally free to participate in camp activities (following the same rules and procedures as everyone else). Most nurses enjoy the active lifestyle of camp; if you like to swim, play tennis, ride, sail, etc., you can easily participate. During this time you are, of course, available for duty when needed. Most issues are the garden variety splinters, blisters, scrapes and bruises, with the occasional tummy ache, sore throat, etc. We have to be prepared, of course, for the more serious emergency, such as a broken bone, concussion, etc. We use a two-way radio system for fast response.
You live in the camp health center and eat in the dining hall. You have 36 hours leave per week. Salary for RNs is usually $650 per week, plus room and board. We can often do a "trade for services", if you have a child you would like to bring as a camper. We cannot do both (trade for a child and pay a salary).
