Job Description

CAMP ALLEGHENY - JOB DESCRIPTION

 

LIFEGUARD

 

General Responsibility: To assist with the operation of Camp Allegheny’s waterfront and swimming activities and to help maintain standards that lead to a quality program.

 

Responsible to the Camp Directors and Assistant Camp Director; directly supervised by the Waterfront Director under guidance of the Program Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  1. A personal relationship with Christ and a desire to share your faith with others.

 

  1. Current life guarding certification. (Camp will provide)

 

  1. Current CPR and first aid certifications. (Camp will provide.)

 

  1. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.

 

  1. Willing to guard at both the creek and the pool, and lead activities as assigned.

 

  1. Ability to relate to one's peer group.

 

  1. Ability to accept supervision.

 

  1. Positive and flexible. 

 

  1. Enthusiastic and sense of humor.

 

  1. At least 18 years of age.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

  1. Monitor the swimming pool or creek following guidelines of the American Red Cross.  This may include big events and staff events.

 

  1. Under the supervision of the Waterfront Director, prepare and teach one lesson plan for a water activity each session.

 

  1. Work with Waterfront Director to set up waterfront area and teach staff their responsibilities in activity.

 

  1. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment, at both the pool and creek.

 

  1. Assist with teaching skills, leading activities, or presenting devotional thought as assigned.

 

  1. Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs and conduct daily check of area for safety and cleanliness. 

 

  1. Assist with the daily cleaning of the pool and its components, the deck, and the bathhouse deck.

 

  1. When assigned to the creek, assist the Boating Coordinator with guarding, boating, or fishing as directed.
  2. Assist with classifying swimmers each opening day.

 

  1. Assist with enforcing the rotation of look-outs at the pool.

 

  1. On rainy days, assist with leading indoor activities for campers.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assist with preparation of tabernacle and gym for opening and closing days, Sundays, and other special programs.  Preparation includes cleaning, moving chairs, sweeping, and vacuuming.

 

  1. Sit at camper overflow tables or monitor bathrooms in the dining hall as assigned on a rotating basis.

 

  1. Spend one night each session either sleeping out with cabin groups at the camp-out site or serving lane duty for a cabin. 

 

  1. Assist with the registration and departure of campers.

 

  1. Take part in evening programs or big events as assigned by the Program Director.

 

  1. Arrive at least ten minutes early to scheduled activity periods, evening programs, evening recreation, meetings, etc., to assist or lead in set-up or preparation of programs.

 

  1. Attend and participate in weekly program staff meetings.

 

Staff Responsibilities:

 

  1. Clean living area daily.

 

  1. Work as a team player.

 

  1. Committed to the development of campers spiritually, physically, educationally, emotionally, and socially.

 

  1. Willing to work with all staff members regardless of their positions.

 

  1. Maintain a high level of interaction with campers and staff.

 

  1. Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Camp Allegheny family.

 

 
  1. Pray that each camper comes to know Christ as Savior.

 

  1. Attend weekly staff Bible studies.  These take place during evening free time one night per session.

 

  1. Attend Sunday morning staff worship.

 

  1. Voice criticisms to your immediate supervisor first.

 

  1. Be in accord with camp aims and policies, being loyal to camp at all times.

 

  1. Assist where needed for the benefit of the campers and the smooth operation of the camp.

 

  1. Respond positively to the direction of the Program Director when he/she makes schedule changes.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

  1. Ability to participate fully in the total camp program.*

 

  1. Ability to communicate and train staff and campers in safety regulations and emergency procedures.

 

  1. Visual and auditory abilities to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

 

  1. Ability to communicate and work with groups of various ages and skills levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers and/or staff.

 

  1. Ability to observe camper behavior, assessing its appropriateness, enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and applying appropriate behavior-management techniques.

 

  1. Physical ability to respond appropriately and quickly to situations requiring first aid.

 

  1. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities that achieve camper development objectives.

 

  1. Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

 

  1. Ability to identify and respond to hazards.  Must be able to assist campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).

 

 

These are not the only duties to be performed.  Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
