The Kids Camp Unit Leader is responsible for the successful administration of Grotonwood’s overnight camping program for Kids age 7-17. The unit leader provides ongoing support and supervision to the Camp Counselors who facilitate the program and ensures safety of all those in their care and compliance to camp policies.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: This is a residential seasonal position. The usual camp work-week is six days on and one day off, including staff meetings, and regular duties. Our summer camp season is ten-weeks long including pre-camp training. The summer camp position is exempt from minimum wage and overtime regulations per State of Massachusetts wage and hour law. Weekend work is required.
This job requires the ability to lead group prayer, Bible studies, and to implement a Christian faith-based curriculum in a small and large group setting.
SUMMER CAMP DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise the health and wellbeing of children ages 7-17 in our overnight camping programs
- Lead, mentor and provide ongoing training to staff in various life stages and from various backgrounds
- Plan and oversee the implementation of camp activities by the Rec Team and ensure they are inclusive, engaging, and age-appropriate
- Ensure the camp environment contributes to the overall social, emotional and spiritual development of campers
- Positively redirect/refocus/de-escalate challenging behaviors and homesickness
- Support kids diagnosed with learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or ADHD
- Implement faith-based curriculums, Bible studies, and participate in daily worship sessions
- Investigate and resolve bullying, harassment and/or conflict in line with camp policies
- Create a fun and welcoming environment for campers of all religious backgrounds and gender identities
- Supervise and participate in all assigned aspects of the campers’ day
- Complete before/after-hours duties as assigned by the demands of the program or the camp director
- Follow Grotonwood’s policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, written documentation, and emergencies
- Prepare and lead trainings, meetings and debriefs with your team
- Assist campers and staff in emergencies (fire, evacuation, active shooter, illness, or injury)
- Janitorial duties – maintain standards of safety and cleanliness across camp
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Two years of college or equivalent applicable education, training and/or experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in this position will be considered
- Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity etc.)
- Ability to speak any language in addition to English desirable
- First Aid/CPR certification desirable
